Description

180g high-definition premium vinyl pressing for super fidelity, the complete original album + 2 bonus tracks. Now, There Was a Song!, long unavailable on vinyl, was Cash’s fourth LP for Columbia Records, originally released in December 1960. This quintessential album gave Johnny Cash a chance to pay tribute to his own musical influences and the songs that made country music great. Songs like Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”(1947), Ernest Tubb’s “I Will Miss You When You Go” (1952) and Hank Thompson’s “Honky Tonk Girl” (1954), all of which influenced Cash in his own early development as an artist and performer. These aren’t just covers, they’re songs that Cash very much made his own.

Now, There Was a Song! Features Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two backed by a fiddle, pedal steel guitar, and piano, with more conventional country settings and rhythms. The album was recorded in only one session, and no track required more than three takes.

In addition to this sensational LP, we have included two bonus tracks from the same period. Both tracks consist of cover versions by Cash of other country music pioneers: Jack Clement’s “It’s Just About Time,” and the timeless “Oh Lonesome Me,” composed by Don Gibson. Here again, Johnny Cash stamped his own personality on both songs and genuinely made them his own.
