This compilation accurately documents the manner in which Don Shirley created his own genre: jazz tinged but not really jazz, soulful, but not really soul, often reaching out into areas that were distinctively classical. Check Irving Berlin’s ‘Blue Skies’, which Shirley endows with a breath of Bach; ‘In a Moorish Marketplace’ with its hint of Ravel, or the simple beauty of ‘One for My Baby (and One for the Road)’, on which Shirley opts for the most economical of approaches yet provides a performance of sheer beauty, one that never wavers far from the blues.
